Description

Alberto D'Andrea, Christian Andreani, Francesco Bozza, The coins of Molise, Mosciano Sant'Angelo (TE), D'Andrea Editions, 2008

The work deals with all the monetary production of Molise, from the first issues of the Frentani and Samnites, passing through the Social War, up to the last medieval issues, when Nicholas II of Monforte waged his personal war against the Aragonese in favor of the Angevins, pretenders to the throne. The pre-Roman centers treated are Aquilonia, Isernia, Larino, Pallanum and Venafro (the whole age-old question of the dubious attribution of its coins is reported on the latter), for the Social War the mints of Boviano and Isernia are examined. The Middle Ages described the coinage of Campobasso, Isernia (this city deals only with the issue of the coins that have been attributed to it without, however, still having an actual confirmation), Limosano and Termoli (although it remains to be verified whether the coins bearing the letter "T" were issued by this center), the coins of San Severo and Alvignano (the latter recently discovered mint) are described outside the region, as the two centers were part of the Monforte domain. It should be noted that the work shows all the drawings and color photos of the coins recently discovered and acquired by the Archaeological Superintendence of Molise: over fifteen unpublished specimens, almost all for Limosano.
